Hospital Energy Saving Solutions
Given advancement of medical technologies and upgrading of diagnostic and treatment equipment, hospitals are in increasingly urgent need of a refined, intelligent,
high-quality and highly reliable indoor environment. Both the construction expense and the building energy consumption are on the rise. By now,
hospitals have become the largest public energy consumers.
Energy consumption in hospitals has the following characteristics:
Diversified Energy Demands and Stringent Requirements for Environmental Quality
There are various kinds of medical electrical equipment that consumes water, power and natural gas (or fuel), and steam/hot water is sometimes needed. Furthermore, there are various causative agents and susceptible population in the hospital. The need of purification and sterilization is pressing.
Large Overall Energy Consumption, With A/C System Accounting for A Large Part
The A/C system in hospitals operates constantly throughout a year without stop. The energy expense on A/C system accounts for the largest part of the operation cost of the hospital (or second only to labor cost). The A/C system operates for an extended period of time, which poses stringent requirements on terminals. Furthermore, both clean A/C system and comfort A/C system are needed. The clean A/C system in the operating room operates for a particularly long time.
Energy Consumption Change Related to Many Factors
Such factors include regional difference, level difference and professional difference.
Differentiation of Equipment Operation Policy
In transition season and winter, cooling supply will be suspended and heating supply started for general wards. However, the Operation Department of the Outpatient Building and the medical equipment room may be still in need of cooling. For energy conservation in hospitals, systematic and comprehensive consideration must be given to the cooling/heating source, transmission system, HVAC equipment, control system and operation management.

The A/C system of a hospital integrates the A/C functions of different building types. On the heating source side, such functions include chilling, heating and sanitary hot water. On the demand side, such functions include surgery, hospitalization, diagnosis and treatment, assay, outpatient service, medicine and tubes and biochemistry. Different functional rooms require totally different temperatures, humidifies, fresh air, air flow, air purification and air pressure. Related data indicate that of the energy consumptions in hospitals, power accounts for about 64%. Specifically, A/C system takes up about 50% of the total. A/C system and heating (including hot water and steam) system have become the biggest two energy consumers.
